Where It Began
Amy Chavez met Max Poen when he was just nine years old while working as his one-to-one aide in the classroom. Max has cerebral palsy, is non-verbal, and uses a wheelchair. From the beginning, Amy and Max connected through shared joy, creativity, and a determination to explore the world on their own terms.
Why Not?
Over the years, Amy and Max have gone swimming, roller skating, camping, and created countless adventures together. They started a book club, co-authored a book now available at local libraries and bookstores, and launched Creatability Hour, an inclusive library program focused on art, reading, and social connection.
From Friendship to Mission
That spirit of curiosity, determination, and limitless possibility led to the founding of Max Out Life in 2024. Today, Max Out Santa Cruz serves as the local community chapter, creating inclusive adventures and opportunities for individuals with special needs throughout Santa Cruz County.
